Entangling biological systems
Experiment demonstrates quantum mechanical effects from biological system.
Copper nanoparticles to replace toxic palladium and expensive platinum in the synthesis of medications
The effectiveness of copper nanoparticles as a catalyst has been proven.
Hybrid electrolyte enhances supercapacitance in vertical graphene nanosheets
Combining the characteristics of aqueous and organic electrolytes into a hybrid version increases VGN performance in supercapacitors, while KOH activation improves nanostructure and charge storage capacity.
The quantum waltz of electrons hints at the next generation of chips
Researchers have successfully measured some of the quantum properties of electrons in two-dimensional semiconductors. This work in the field of spintronics could one day lead to chips that are not only smaller but that also generate less heat.
UW launches Institute for Nano-Engineered Systems
The University of Washington has launched a new institute aimed at accelerating research at the nanoscale: the Institute for Nano-Engineered Systems, or NanoES.
Superior hydrogen catalyst just grows that way
Scientists aim at bringing down the cost of hydrogen fuel cells by using a dirt-cheap compound to create an uneven surface that resembles a plant's leaves. The additional area helps catalyze hydrogen almost as efficiently as platinum.
New technology using magnet to generate electricity from heat
Large anomalous Nernst effect discovered in antiferromagnet.
Thermal gradients are shown to enhance spin transport in graphene
Researchers have demonstrated that the application of a thermal gradient in spintronic devices can cause spin signal to increase as a result of a novel thermoelectric phenomenon predicted and subsequently observed in graphene. Specifically, the enhanced spin signal is two orders of magnitude larger than anything previously reported for thermal effects in metals.
Towards a continuous atom laser
A research team has made important progress towards the creation of the first continuous atom laser.
